Maduru Oya National Park which is 58,849 hectares in content is located in the dry zone and 314 kms from Colombo. It is situated by Kuda Sigiriya, a great eco location yet to be explored. Maduru Oya is well known for its elephant habitat. Other than elephants, leopards, sloth bears, Sambhur, spotted and barking deer, wild boar and wild buffalo are also found here. Torque Macaque, Purple-faced leaf monkey and nocturnal slender Loris are also found in the park. Lesser Adjutant, Woolly necked stork, Openbill, painted stork, Racket tailed Drongo, Yellow-fronted barbet, Sri Lanka jungle fowl and spur fowl are among the over 100 species of birds found within the park. Ruins at Henanigala, Kudawila, Gurukumbura, Uluketangoda, Werapokuna and several other places include ancient Buddhist shrines, Temples, Dagobas, Statues, Devales and Hermitages from different eras in Sri Lankan history. An ancient sluice dating prior to the 6th century BCE was discovered recently on the old breached earthen bund of the Maduru Oya. Early Brahminical inscriptions dating from the 3rd century BCE are found at Kandegamakanda. Maduru Oya can be reached through Matale and Hettipola or from Dehiattakandiya coming from Polonnaruwa or from Mahiyanganaya. Maduru Oya is closer to Wasgamuwa National Park. Another route from Colombo (165 miles/265 luns) Kurunegala, Dambulla, Habarana, Polonnaruwa and Manampitiya. Main access from the north is from Manampitiya (16 miles/25 kms) located on the Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa highway. There are two circuit bungalows and one dormitory at the park office in front of Maduru Oya reservoir. Ulhitiya campsite is available for nature lovers. There is a well-arranged wildlife museum at the park entrance

We visited park on 14th and stayed one night in side the park. We were the only team in the park for two days. Very beautiful park you can see many elephants and other small animals.

Maduru Oya National Park is a national park of Sri Lanka, established under the Mahaweli development project and also acts as a catchment of the Maduru Oya Reservoir. The park was designated on 9 November 1983. Providing a sanctuary to wildlife, especially for elephants and protecting the immediate catchments of five reservoirs are the importance of the park. A community of Vedda people, the indigenous ethnic group of Sri Lanka lives within the park boundary in Henanigala. The park is situated 288 kilometres (179 mi) north-east of Colombo.

Last month, we had an incredible adventure at Maduru Oya National Park. We traveled in three Nissan Patrol jeeps, and although the track wasn't too rough, the rainy day added a touch of excitement to our journey. The park is teeming with wildlife! We saw numerous elephants, including some swimming gracefully in the lake. The variety of birds was astounding, and we also spotted foxes, cobras, deer, and monkeys. One of the highlights was filming an overland documentary video, which will be available soon on our "Travel Weekend" YouTube channel. We invite everyone to watch it and share in our amazing experience. Overall, it was an awesome trip that we highly recommend to nature and wildlife enthusiasts!

We are so happy that our host suggested this park rather than bringing us to Kaudulla we had asked for. Here in Maduru you really can enjoy roaming around freely with your jeep without seeing other tourists or q-ing up in jeep lines. In all afternoon we saw only two jeeps. Within a hour we saw minimum 30 elephants, lots with young ones, deers, monkeys, buffaloes, eagles, peacocks... Amazing safari, we couldn't have imagined it better.
