It's fine to visit. Be careful with no shoes outside. It's a very hot floor especially concret. Death sentence scene in one room in my opinion are not suitable for children. There was no possibility to climb at the big Budda.

This place left me disappointed. I came mainly to see the elephant, and at first the idea of it being tied up seemed somewhat understandable, since it’s a large animal. However, I quickly realized the elephant was restrained so tightly that it could barely take a single step forward. No animal should be treated like that, especially such a beautiful and intelligent creature. It felt wrong and left a very bad impression. The Buddha statue itself is not particularly impressive either. It is big, but that’s basically it, with no real “wow” factor. There is an entrance fee, but I didn’t feel comfortable financially supporting a place that treats animals this way. I simply walked in and nobody even noticed or reacted. I visited in the afternoon and there were almost no people, just one older couple. Honestly, that’s probably for the best, because places like this should not be supported if animals are treated in such conditions.

Wewurukannala Vihara in Dikwella is one of the most interesting and unforgettable temples in southern Sri Lanka. The biggest attraction here is the huge seated Buddha statue, which is about 160 feet tall. It is one of the tallest Buddha statues in the country and looks very impressive when you stand in front of it. Before reaching the statue, you have to walk through the famous “Tunnel of Hell.” This tunnel is dark and full of large statues and paintings that show punishments for people who do bad things. It can look scary and strange, but it is made to teach people to live a good and kind life. Each scene gives a lesson about the results of bad behavior such as lying, stealing, or hurting others. When you come out of the tunnel and see the tall, peaceful Buddha statue, it feels very meaningful. The change from the dark tunnel to the bright open space gives a strong message about moving from sin and fear to peace and understanding. Around the temple, there are also smaller shrines, colorful wall paintings, and quiet places to rest. Wewurukannala Vihara is not just a temple — it is a special place that mixes religion, art, and moral lessons. It gives visitors an unforgettable experience and a lot to think about.

This is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, as per the locals, it was initially built by a King aprox 600 years ago. The initial shrine is still there. The largest shrine was built in around 150yrs ago. This is s must visit place in southern Sri Lanka.
