The National Spice Garden is a must-visit, especially if you’ve been skeptical about other "spice gardens" in the area. The grounds are beautiful and very well-maintained. A huge plus is the flexibility—you can take a guided tour to learn about the plants, but you don’t have to. We opted to just walk around and enjoy the scenery at our own pace. The real hidden gem here, however, is the shop. The prices are incredibly affordable and honestly unbeatable compared to the tourist shops in town. For example, we bought a small bag of high-quality cardamom here for just 540 LKR. We had seen the exact same size bag in Kandy for 1,280 LKR (and that was the "cheap" price!). They have every spice imaginable, and the quality is top-tier.

We turned up unannounced having got a taxi from Kandy. We were offered a tour as soon as we arrived in the shop which we happily agreed to. The lady who took us around the spice garden was incredibly knowledgeable and made the tour super interesting (just for myself and my husband). I am a big fan of using spices, so it was particularly interesting for me to see the native plants and learn more about the properties of each different spice. The tour was completely free and signs made it clear that tipping was not required. We finished off in the shop to buy a variety of spices to take back home. Well worth the visit.

We enjoyed our visit so much! The tour is free, all you have to do is register yourself and ask about it at the counter. We learned about many condiments and plants like pepper, turmeric, vanilla, lemongrass and more. Our tour guide, miss Kavita, was knowledgeable and made it an interactive experience! I highly recommend it!
