Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya is absolutely stunning and one of the most relaxing places we visited in Sri Lanka. The gardens are massive, so it feels more like walking through a curated jungle than a park. The palm avenue is super impressive and feels very grand, and the giant trees and bamboo groves make you feel tiny. The orchid house was a highlight, with loads of colorful and rare orchids, and the cannonball tree was a cool quirky stop (especially when you see the massive fruits). Walking along the river was peaceful and gave really nice views, and overall the place is very clean and well maintained. It is perfect for a slow walk, photos, and a break from busy cities. Just be ready to walk a lot, bring water, and maybe a hat because parts are very open. Definitely worth visiting if you are in Kandy.

Peradeniya Botanical Garden, located near Kandy in Sri Lanka, is the country’s largest and one of its most historic botanical gardens. It spans about 59 hectares (146 acres) and is renowned for its rich and diverse collection of more than 4,000 plant species, including palms, orchids, flowering trees, and many tropical woody plants. Originally established in 1821 under British colonial rule, the garden has evolved from its early focus on introducing economically important plants—such as coffee, tea, and rubber—into a major center for horticulture, research, and conservation. Today, it is celebrated for its scenic avenues of palms, extensive orchid houses, and tranquil landscapes, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most visited natural attractions.

Worth paying the pricey entrance fee and spending the day in these splendid gardens. Don't miss the colony of fruit bats. Some beautiful orchids and stunning trees. Everything very well looked after. Clean toilets in several locations. Cafe is really expensive.

This is perhaps the most beautiful botanical garden in the world. It exhibits so much beauty in Sri Lanka. Keep in mind; the ticket counter closes an hour before the garden so you have an hour more than you think you do. Probably allocate at least an hour depending on walk speed. Bring an app like iNaturalist or Google Lens to identify stuff you see. Pay special attention to the beautiful birds. Especially the most beautiful bird IMO, the Indian Paradise-Flycatcher. The north end of the garden seems more likely with wildlife, the south end is quieter.

Simply incredible Botanic Gardens. Unlike many which we’ve visited that can seem somewhat artificial, this has a lovely natural feel, although (of course) the majority of the trees are exotic. But maybe because this was first established over 200 years ago everything has matured together. We certainly saw more local birds inc. brown headed and crimson-fronted barbet, several red-backed Flamebacks, sunbirds, flower-peckers & flycatchers. Beautiful orchid house and a lovely cafe/restaurant perfectly situated on the great lawn at the centre of the gardens. If you like botanical gardens you’ll want to spend a full day here!
