Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the most sacred and historic Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, located in the heart of Badulla in the Uva Province. It is considered one of the Solosmasthana — the sixteen sacred places in Sri Lanka that were visited by Lord Buddha. According to ancient chronicles, Lord Buddha visited this site during his third visit to Sri Lanka at the invitation of King Indaka. After the visit, the king built a stupa enshrining a strand of the Buddha’s hair and some drops of sweat — hence the temple’s name “Muthiyangana,” meaning “the place of pearls of sweat.” The temple features a beautifully designed stupa (dagoba) with traditional Kandyan architectural influence. The surrounding structures, moonstones, and carvings showcase the craftsmanship of ancient Sri Lankan builders. Inside the temple premises, there are several image houses containing large Buddha statues, murals, and relic chambers that add to the spiritual atmosphere.
