Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya is a significant and highly revered Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. Located in the Mahiyanganaya area of the Uva Province, it is believed to be the site of one of the Buddha's three visits to the island. According to ancient texts, the Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka was to this very place, where he settled a conflict between two warring tribes. He then gave the hair relic to the god Sumana Saman, the guardian of the area. The temple's centerpiece is a large stupa (a dome-shaped monument), which is said to have been built by the god Sumana Saman to house the sacred hair relic. The stupa was later enshrined with a collarbone relic of the Buddha and enlarged several times by different kings throughout history.
