We stayed at Bawa’s very own bedroom in the main house. Pre-dinner served his favorite cocktail by the lawn. Dinner and following day breakfast were alright. The hard bed and spare amenities are acceptable as we are here for the landscape that are calm and serene. This vast ground dotted with functional housing converted into rooms in various size and layout you can book a stay. Any architecture enthusiast shall visit and experience the concept of tropical modernism and living with nature. Love the overgrown tree by the back terrace. The secluded location is not easily reached, the road leading to property is rough and narrow. The premise offer a guided tour during the day, but many areas are off limit. We rather stay here to absorb in all the colors and senses as if we are living in a bygone era.

From the very first moment, I felt more than happy that I chose the mesmerising Lunuganga for my vacation. The first impression was simply magical; it felt like stepping into another world, surrounded by a lush green paradise where time seemed to stand still from the moment I arrived until I left. Overall, it exceeded my expectations and went far beyond that unforgettable first impression. I truly loved the serene river view and the exotic Italian garden concept, beautifully embossed with rustic, antique, and uniquely charming architecture. The history of this place feels timeless and classic, and Lunuganga stands as a true testament to that. I am deeply grateful to Geoffrey Bawa for leaving behind such an extraordinary masterpiece for all of us, and I sincerely bless his soul. The food was absolutely delicious, with plenty of classic options to choose from, making every meal a delight. The service was equally remarkable; exceptionally warm and attentive, starting right from the welcoming moment. When it comes to the cost, it is truly worth the price, especially considering the many thoughtful complimentary additions included. I soulfully love this place forever ♡ and I will return to Lunuganga again and again. I truly wish that this place will remain untouched and safe. Dinithi Ranasinghe

Lunuganga Estate is a truly exceptional place to stay. The setting and views are absolutely out of this world—peaceful, poetic, and unlike anywhere else. Waking up surrounded by such a landscape is an experience in itself. The service is outstanding: warm, attentive, and genuinely thoughtful without ever feeling intrusive. Every detail is handled with care, making the stay feel effortless and special. The food is excellent, with bakery items being a particular highlight—fresh, well made, and memorable. The only minor drawback is breakfast, which feels a bit limited, as guests are allowed to choose only one main dish. Overall, Lunuganga Estate offers a beautiful, refined, and deeply memorable experience that we would happily return to.

I would only reccomend staying if you are a massive fan of Geoffrey Bawa otherwise do the tour to see the magnificent gardens and dont stay. The accommodation has been unashamedly preserved to be as it was when Geoffrey established and decorated the house and buildings decade's ago. A kind interpretation would be this authentically honours the heritage and history and the resulting accommodation is rustic. An alternative view is the rooms are woefully sub standard. Poor uncomfortable mattresses, no fridges or TVs, unrenovated ancient bathrooms and a lack of the same amenities provided in other Teardrop hotels at a super premium rate (no complimentary minimal, no fridge, very limited tea and coffee, signicantly less choice at social drinks etc etc). One attempt to modernise was to install an ugly air con unit in the room which could have executed better. We stayed in three Teardrop hotels in Sri Lanka and absolutely loved two of them but would not return to Lunuganga. I feel the preservation theme is an excuse not to spend the money to provide quality and amenity consistent with the cost of accommodation. I also feel that the beloved estate is decaying and is not being preserved for the future which is a great shame I hope Teardrop management reads this. However apparently its booked months in advance so it does not really matter what my views are!

Magical place. Highly recommend the Garden Tour. What an incredible discovery Geoffrey Bawa is - we went to discover many more of his places after Lunuganga. Inspirational.
