Lahugala Kitulana National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s smallest yet most charming wildlife sanctuaries. Located in the Ampara District (Eastern Province), it is a vital part of the "elephant corridor" connecting Yala and Gal Oya national parks. While small in size, it is a powerhouse for elephant sightings and ancient history, offering a much quieter, more "off-the-beaten-path" experience than the crowded Yala or Udawalawe. 🐘 Wildlife Highlights The park’s centerpiece is the Lahugala Tank, which attracts a high density of wildlife, particularly during the dry season. Elephants: Known for a resident population of about 150 Sri Lankan elephants. They are particularly drawn to the Beru (Sacciolepis interrupta) grass that grows around the tank. Other Mammals: You can spot Sloth Bears, Leopards (rare), Wild Boar, Sambar Deer, and the endemic Toque Macaque. Bird Watching: A paradise for birders. Look for the Great White Pelican, Painted Stork, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, and the endemic Sri Lankan Spurfowl. It was also the last place the now-extinct Knob-billed Duck was recorded. 🏛️ Archaeological Significance Lahugala is unique because it blends nature with ancient ruins. Magul Maha Viharaya: Located on the edge of the park, this 2nd-century BC temple is traditionally believed to be the site where King Kavan Tissa married Princess Viharamahadevi. The Moonstone: The temple features a unique moonstone where elephants are carved with their mahouts—a detail not found elsewhere in Sri Lankan architecture. 🗓️ Best Time to Visit The park is open year-round, but your experience will change with the seasons: July to August (Peak): The best time for elephant sightings. As other water sources dry up, large herds congregate around the Lahugala Tank to feed and drink. January to March: Another dry window with good visibility and pleasant weather. Hours: Generally open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Early morning (6:30 AM) or late afternoon (3:30 PM) are best for seeing active elephants. 📍 Essential Info & Logistics Location: Approximately 15km inland from Arugam Bay/Pottuvil on the A4 highway. Entry Fees: As of recent updates, foreign adult entry is roughly $20–$25 (excluding taxes, vehicle permits, and service fees). Local rates are significantly lower (approx. LKR 60–100). Access: Most visitors book a 3–4 hour jeep safari from Arugam Bay or Pottuvil. Because the main road actually cuts through the park, you can sometimes spot elephants right from your vehicle without even entering the gates!

This national park is surrounded by two water ways Heda oya and Karanda oya. It has 3 major water reservoirs named Lahugala Maha wewa, Kithulana wewa and Sengamuwa wewa. Most common faunal attractions are elephants, crocodiles and sloth bears. There’s a famous flora - a grass alled ‘Beru’, which is a favorite food of elephants.

Amazingly beautiful. I only rode through on my bike on my way to Hiriketiya and l saw 6+ elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, coyotes, monitor lizards, chital dear and so many birds it was crazy. I didn’t even need to go on a paid tour. Then l had to return on my way back to Colombo and l saw even more animals like wild pigs and Rudda mongoose

Nestled away from the beaten path lies one of Sri Lanka's best-kept secrets, a national park that boasts tranquility and unparalleled wildlife sightings. Having had the privilege of visiting this hidden gem twice, I can attest to its allure and pristine beauty. What sets this park apart is its blissful lack of traffic. On one occasion, only a single jeep ventured into the park for the entire month, a testament to its untouched wilderness. This rarity ensures an intimate wildlife experience, undisturbed by the crowds found in more popular destinations. The discovery of sloth bear footprints further underscored the park's rich biodiversity, while herds of elephants roamed freely, offering glimpses of their majestic presence. Despite its proximity to the renowned Kumana National Park, this hidden gem boasts a unique habitat reminiscent of riverine forests. This distinct environment not only sets it apart but also provides a haven for diverse bird species. I was fortunate enough to spot the rare Greater Racket-tailed Drongo during my birdwatching excursions, adding to the park's allure for avian enthusiasts. A highlight of exploration within the park is reaching the end of the main road, where one can disembark from the safari jeep and venture on foot along the riverbanks. This immersive experience allows for a deeper connection with nature and often leads to remarkable encounters with wildlife. For travelers venturing to the southeastern reaches of Sri Lanka, this park is a must-visit destination. Whether you seek solitude amidst nature's embrace or yearn for thrilling wildlife encounters, this hidden gem promises an unforgettable journey through the heart of Sri Lanka's wilderness.
