Kumana National Park is one of the most beautiful and peaceful wildlife destinations in Sri Lanka. The park is especially famous for its incredible birdlife, particularly around the lagoons and wetlands, where you can see pelicans, painted storks, herons, and even rare migratory birds during the season. The landscape is a stunning mix of dry forest, open grasslands, and water bodies, creating excellent opportunities to see elephants, buffalo, crocodiles, deer, and occasionally leopards. What makes Kumana special is that it is less crowded compared to other national parks, allowing visitors to enjoy wildlife in a calm and natural environment. The safari experience is truly rewarding, especially during early morning or late afternoon drives. It is a perfect destination for bird watchers, nature lovers, and anyone who appreciates untouched wilderness. Highly recommended for an authentic Sri Lankan wildlife experience.

We recently visited the Kumana National Park on 2 full day safaris in January 2026. The park offers exceptional wild life sightings in a serene, less-crowded experience. We were fortunate to have 6 leopard sightings and the park far exceeded our expectations with abundance of other animals and birds frequenting the water bodies. Unfortunately, public restrooms are primarily limited to the park entrance (which are of deplorable standard) and there are no designated rest stops with washrooms inside the 35,000-hectare park, making full-day tours particularly challenging. I kindly request the authorities to address this issue as an urgent need, to cater to the local and foreign visitors to the park.

One of the best places in Sri Lanka to see birds and occasionally leopards or sloth bears. Spotting leopards isn’t easy though – we went two days in a row and saw only two. The best time to visit is in the morning. Be at the gate when it opens at 6AM for the best chance of sightings. Safari jeeps can be arranged in Panama town, and many hotels also provide their own. I’d recommend doing one safari focusing only on leopards (which means moving faster and covering more ground), and another just to enjoy the scenery at a slower pace. The landscapes are stunning, with the sea and beach forming the backdrop in the morning – but you won’t have much time to enjoy it if you’re chasing leopards. Unfortunately, I didn’t spot any sloth bears on my visits. Conditions can be dusty and humid, so bring scarves, face masks, hats or caps, and keep plenty of water with you. By around 9AM it gets hot, so be prepared.

Kumana National Park spread over 350 sq kms, lies to the east of the more popular Yala National Park separated by the Kumbukkan Oya. The River (Oya) demarcates a part of the boundary between the Southern and Eastern Provinces, as well. The estuary of the river lies within the park, Kumana has an extensive network of wetlands (villus), lagoons, and tanks that attract a wide variety of wildlife, particularly birds. It has therefore earned a reputation and rightly so, for being a bird watchers paradise, renowned for its rich and diverse avifauna. Over 200 species of birds have been identified within the park which serves as a crucial breeding and nesting ground for both migratory and resident species. In addition to birds, Kumana is home to a number of mammals, including elephants, leopards, sloth bears, fox and spotted deer. The park's wetland ecosystem also supports a large population of reptiles such as crocodiles, (both salt and fresh water species), monitor lizards, turtles and a variety of snakes. The Kumana Villu, a 500 acre natural swamp, is a key feature of the park This park plays a vital role in conservation and research of Sri Lanka's natural biodiversity. Due to the park's remoteness from the usual tourist hotspots the Kumana National Park has thankfully been spared from the unchecked invasion of visitors leaving the birds, animals and reptiles relatively undisturbed. A little remembered fact is that there was a village within the park, inhabited by descendants of Sinhala people who fled their homes following the Uva Wellesa rebellion of 1818 and found refuge in Kumana gammana near the mouth of the Kumbukkan Oya. The community sustained themselves by farming, gathering and fishing in the nearby waters. They were forced to flee once again by the Tamil terrorists who gained control of the area in the late 1980's. Very little remains of this village except the abandoned buildings of the primary school, a shrine and a few houses in ruins. Arugam Bay is the only nearby tourist destination but the interest of visitors there is almost entirely focused on surfing. Make sure you carry your own food and plenty of water because nothing is available at the park.

Kumana National Park is a true paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers who prefer a more peaceful experience away from the crowds of Yala. This park is world-renowned for its vast 'Kumana Villu' mangrove swamp, which serves as a vital nesting ground for thousands of migratory and endemic birds. During a safari, you can witness majestic Painted Storks, Pelicans, Ibises, and even the rare Black-necked Stork. While birds are the main highlight, don’t be surprised to spot elephants, leopards, and golden jackals roaming the plains as well. The landscape is incredibly serene, featuring ancient rock inscriptions and beautiful lagoons. Pro tip: The best time to visit is from May to June when the bird migration is at its peak. Make sure to bring a pair of high-quality binoculars and a telephoto lens to capture the incredible avian diversity. It’s a quiet, raw, and deeply rewarding wilderness experience!
