We attended the annual procession of Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, and it was truly a one-of-a-kind experience. The entire atmosphere was filled with devotion, tradition, and cultural beauty. The beautifully decorated elephants, dancers, and drummers, along with the deep sense of spirituality, made the procession unforgettable. We were seated in the VIP area, and despite their very busy schedules, the organizers thoughtfully provided a box of snacks and drinks for VIP attendees, which was a kind and appreciated gesture. The procession started around 9:00 PM and lasted for about 4–5 hours, yet it remained engaging throughout. It is an incredible opportunity to witness Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage and community spirit. Highly recommended to experience at least once in a lifetime.

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is a must-visit for anyone in or near Colombo. It’s one of the most spiritually significant sites in Sri Lanka, marking the location of Lord Buddha’s third visit to the island. What makes this temple truly stand out are the extraordinary murals by Solias Mendis. The level of detail and the unique, calming color tones are breathtaking, they honestly feel like a living history book of Sri Lankan Buddhism. Even if you aren't religious, the artistry alone is worth the trip.

Excellent historical place to visit closer to Colombo (~40mins). Free entry for everyone. The art inside the Buddha statue room are from the 18th century, they are beautiful and are excellently preserved. There's not much English signage so remember to go with a local guide/friend who can describe some of the art.
