Amazing natural experience! The Kanniya Hot Water Springs in Trincomalee are truly unique — seven small wells with different water temperatures, each one giving a different feeling. The place is peaceful and full of history. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy nature. Facilities are simple, but the experience is worth it. Best to visit early morning to avoid crowds. The Kanniya Hot Water Springs (often referred to as Kinniya) is a natural geothermal site located approximately 8–10 km north-west of Trincomalee town. The site features seven square-shaped wells, each notably containing water at slightly different temperatures despite being only a few feet apart. Key Features 1. Unique Temperature: The water temperature typically ranges between 38°C and 42°C. A unique characteristic is that the wells temporarily run dry after about 10–15 buckets are drawn, before naturally refilling. 2. Healing Properties: Many visitors bathe here believing the mineral-rich waters have therapeutic powers to treat skin ailments and arthritis. 3. Archaeological Status: The site is a protected archaeological monument containing ruins of a Buddhist monastery and a stupa mound from the early Anuradhapura period.

There is a large paid car park, and from there it’s about a 400-meter walk to the hot water spring wells. There are 7 covered wells in total with different temperature. When I visited, only 5 baskets were available for bathing, and most of them were damaged and leaking water. Because of this, we had to wait in a queue to get a basket, and around 30–40 people were waiting at the time. The changing rooms were very dirty and poorly maintained. They are attached to the toilets, and unpleasant smells were noticeable even outside. The entrance ticket price is Rs. 100. There is also a temple located near the wells. On the way from the car park, you’ll find several toy shops and juice stalls, which adds some activity to the area. The car park also charges a small fee.

I recently visited Kanniya Hot Water Springs and it was a memorable experience. The site is unique with several natural hot water wells, each with slightly different temperatures, which makes it special to try each one. The springs are believed to have historical and cultural significance, adding more value to the visit. The area is maintained fairly well with basic facilities for visitors, though it can get a little crowded at times. It’s a peaceful spot to relax, bathe, and enjoy nature. A must-visit place if you are in Trincomalee.

There are seven wells here, each with a slightly different temperature—though a couple feel almost the same. No matter which one you choose, the water is always hot and relaxing. A unique experience every time!
