Visiting Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was truly a spiritual experience. The peaceful atmosphere, the gentle sound of prayers, and the sight of devotees offering flowers create a feeling that is impossible to put into words. There is such a powerful sense of history and devotion here, knowing that this sacred tree has been venerated for over two thousand years. The surroundings are well maintained, and despite the number of visitors, the environment still feels calm and deeply spiritual. Whether you go for religious reasons or simply to experience Sri Lanka’s rich heritage, this sacred place leaves your heart feeling lighter and your mind at peace. An unforgettable and deeply meaningful visit. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to Anuradhapura.

Humbling and Inspiring Experience Our group of thirteen, travelling with Flamingo Lanka, arrived at the sacred site of Sri Maha Bodhi in the afternoon on 21st November 2025. The 500 metre walk from the designated car park was through well-kept pathways shaded by many other large trees. Halfway to the bo tree, we reached a shoe counter where we left our shoes for safekeeping at no charge. Continuing barefoot, we joined a stream of pilgrims, mostly dressed in white, carrying offerings of flowers and incense. The Sri Maha Bodhi is recognised as the oldest living human-planted tree in the world, having been planted in 288BC. It originated from a cutting of the Bo tree in Bodh Gaya, India - the very tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. The sapling was brought to Sri Lanka by Sanghamitta, a buddhist nun, and ceremoniously received by the king marking a significant moment in the island’s religious history. Over the centuries, the Sri Maha Bodhi has been continuously protected and cared for by Buddhist monks, devoted kings and now by the government. It stands surrounded by golden railings on a high platform, serving as the spiritual heart of Anuradhapura. For more than 2300 years, this sacred tree has been venerated by Buddhists from around the world, making it one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka. Standing before the Sri Maha Bodhi, we felt a profound sense of connection to the pilgrims who had come here for centuries before us. The experience was both humbling and inspiring – a reminder of faith and tradition.

A few years ago, I had an idea in my mind — why not use CCTV or a proper live camera system at Sri Mahabodhi, so that all devotees can clearly see and worship peacefully through a big monitor without pushing or disturbing others? This year, when I came for my birthday, I was truly happy and surprised to see that this idea has been perfectly implemented. The live camera and big monitor arrangement is very helpful for devotees. Everyone can see Sri Mahabodhi clearly, worship calmly, and feel spiritually connected even from a distance. It shows great planning and respect for the devotees’ comfort. This kind of improvement makes the sacred experience more organized and peaceful. Highly appreciated this thoughtful arrangement. May this holy place continue to inspire and bless everyone. 🙏🌿✨

This is one of the most sacred and oldest trees recorded in history. The Maha Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, India, was planted later as a sapling taken from this very tree, adding to its immense religious and historical significance. While weekends can be a bit busy, there is plenty of space for everyone to sit peacefully and observe their religious practices without feeling rushed. Oil lamps for lighting are placed outside the walls, and there is ample parking available nearby. You will also find many shops around the area where you can purchase flower offerings. It is recommended to light the oil lamps and offer incense sticks before entering through one of the gates. There is security provided by the local police, and all bags are checked before entry to ensure safety and order.

Sri Maha Bodhi at night is an experience beyond words—deeply spiritual, calming, and full of positive energy. As one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world, the atmosphere after sunset feels especially powerful and serene. Soft lights illuminate the ancient Bodhi tree, creating a peaceful glow that invites quiet reflection and mindfulness. The sounds of gentle chanting, Buddha puja, and the fragrance of flowers and incense fill the air, making the moment feel timeless and sacred. Devotees move respectfully, offering flowers and prayers with pure devotion, which adds to the spiritual depth of the place. Even in silence, the energy here feels alive—calm, protective, and deeply comforting. Sitting near the Bodhi tree at night brings a sense of inner peace, clarity, and connection that is hard to find elsewhere. Stress fades away, replaced by gratitude and stillness. The surroundings are well maintained, clean, and safe, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the sacredness. Whether you come for religious devotion, meditation, or simply to feel the spiritual vibrations, Sri Maha Bodhi at night is a truly divine experience that touches the heart and soul. Highly recommended for anyone seeking peace and spiritual renewal. 🙏
