This place of worship, built by King Vikramabahu III in the late 14th century, is divided into three sections, the Sanctum of Garagha, a dancing hall, and the drummer’s hall. The hall itself, its ceiling, and its pillars are ornated with splendid wood carvings. Since there are very few visitors, let alone tourists the atmosphere is really calm. There are small stalls around the Devalaya selling handmade knick knacks made of brass. If you are into this kind of thing, this is a really good place to buy some little statues or wall decorations. If you are going for larger pieces, there are many stores along the way between the two Viharas; this region is known for the production of brass ornaments.

Decent historic temple where the pillars are made out of wood. The place was very serene and peaceful. Not much to see. Can cover the whole thing in 7-8 minutes. The drive there from Kandy is pretty long. The entry fee is 500 LKR which seemed a bit much considering there’s nothing much to do inside.

The temple is quite simple, and the wood carvings are also rather basic. An entrance fee of 500 rupees is charged. Please do not buy any items offered in front of the temple, as they are sold at extremely overpriced prices.

Small wooden temple with carvings. Far away in nature. Staff is not not capable to speak English other than selling ticket. No information in is provided in writing. The temple itself is closed. There is a note written in Sinhala only that there certain open in hours only (have a look at the picture bellow). It doesn't feel right to look at pictures of what's inside the Temple while visiting the Temple and not being able to enter. A local men is showing a peacock inside the Temple through a hole in wooden door and demanding money for it. It's a temple, not a shop... Not suitable for foreigners. I would reccommend to visit Gedagadaladeniya temple instead.

What is ambakke "Ambakke" most likely refers to Embekke Devalaya (also spelled Ambekka Devalaya), a historical temple complex in Sri Lanka famous for its exquisite wood carvings. It is a significant site for Sri Lankan art and architecture, located in the Udunuwara area of the Kandy District. Here are the key details about Embekke Devalaya: Famous for Wood Carvings: The temple is renowned for having some of the finest wood carvings in Sri Lanka and possibly the world, especially in the Drummers' Hall (Hevisi Mandapaya). Historical Period: It was primarily built during the Gampola Era (14th century), attributed to King Vikramabahu III. Deity: It is dedicated to the Kataragama deviyo (also identified with the Hindu God Skanda or Murugan), a prominent guardian deity in Sri Lanka. Architecture: The Drummers' Hall is a marvel of ancient carpentry, featuring ornate wooden pillars and a unique structural element called the Madol Kurupuwa, a single wooden pin that holds 26 rafters of the roof together. Carving Motifs: The carvings depict a huge variety of subjects, including: Mythical creatures (like the entwined swans, double-headed eagles, and the elephant-bull hybrid). Human figures (dancers, wrestlers, soldiers on horseback, and a mother nursing a child). Decorative patterns (floral and geometric designs). Would you like to know more about the specific wood carvings or perhaps its location and visiting information?
