The temple is easily accessible from Badulla Road, and the atmosphere is very peaceful despite being close to the main road. A must-visit place for anyone interested in Sri Lankan history, Buddhism, and spiritual tranquility.

Visited Dowa Temple on the way to Ella, and it was a really peaceful and meaningful stop. The temple is built into a rock cave, and the unfinished Buddha statue carved into the stone is truly impressive. There’s a quiet, sacred feeling here that makes you slow down and appreciate the history around you. The surroundings are calm and green, and even though the temple is small, it carries a strong spiritual presence. It doesn’t feel crowded or rushed, which makes the visit even more special. A great place to pause, reflect, and experience a lesser known but beautiful historic temple in Sri Lanka. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re traveling through the area.

Dowa Temple (Dowa Rajamaha Viharaya) – Mixed Feelings. We visited this ancient temple on the way to Ella. The main impression is, of course, the huge Buddha statue carved directly into the rock face. The scale is impressive, and it looks very harmonious with the nature. However, there are several important points that significantly spoil the experience: · Paid entrance & possible scam: They charged 1500 rupees (~$5) per person. When we commented on the high price, the ticket sellers claimed it was a "charity donation." BEWARE: There is no visible evidence of any charity work or renovations for this price. You simply pay to enter the territory. · Lack of infrastructure: A guide is not included, and there is minimal information. Essentially, you pay only for the opportunity to approach and look at the statue. The whole visit took us literally a few minutes. · Inconvenient ascent: The path to the statue itself is not a staircase but a rocky, potentially slippery trail. It would be difficult and unsafe for elderly people or those with mobility issues to climb. · Cleanliness: Despite the requirement to remove shoes, the designated shoe storage area was quite littered. Verdict: If you're passing by and have time, you can stop for 10-15 minutes to see the statue. It's probably not worth making a special trip here. Be prepared for the experience to feel very fragmented due to the poor organization (or lack thereof) and the disproportionate entry fee. Be cautious about the stated "charity" purpose of the ticket.
