Aluvihare Rock Temple Aluvihare Rock Temple (Alu Viharaya) is a historic Buddhist temple located in Matale, about 30 km from Kandy. It is one of the most important religious and historical sites in Sri Lanka. 🏛️ Historical Importance • The temple is famous as the place where the Tripitaka (Buddhist scriptures) were first written down on ola leaves in the 1st century BCE. • This happened during the reign of King Walagamba. • Before that, the teachings of the Gautama Buddha were preserved orally by monks. 🪨 Temple Features • Built among large granite rock caves. • Ancient cave shrines with Buddha statues and murals. • A Tripitaka writing hall that shows how monks wrote on palm leaves. • A museum displaying old manuscripts and historical items. 🎨 Murals and Sculptures Some caves contain paintings and sculptures depicting Buddhist stories and historical events, including scenes related to the preservation of the Tripitaka. 📍 Location • Situated on the A9 road between Kandy and Matale. • Easily accessible for travelers visiting the Matale area. 🙏 Why It Is Special Aluvihare is considered a symbol of preserving Buddhist teachings and plays a major role in the history of Theravada Buddhism. ✅ Tip: The temple is built on rocks, so visitors usually need to climb a few steps to explore the caves and shrines. If you want, I can also tell you about: • The story behind the name “Alu Viharaya” • Things to see inside the temple • Best time to visit 🧭

A truly peaceful and spiritually enriching place surrounded by beautiful rock formations and nature. The ancient cave temples, stunning Buddha statues, and historical importance of preserving the Tripitaka make this site very special. The atmosphere is calm and perfect for meditation and reflection. A must-visit destination in Matale for anyone interested in Sri Lankan history, Buddhism, and culture.

The place where the Tripitaka was first transcribed. The rock cave where this was done is conserved and displayed inside the temple premises. A museum, and a mountain top statue you can reach after a 2km walk through an ascending road are the other attractions here apart from the general temple components. There wasn't much of a crowd on the typical Saturday morning we visited and parking space was quite sufficient. However, the situation can be different on long weekends or poya days.

It is an ancient temple in Matale district . Nearly 2 km towards Dambulla from Matale town centre . It has rock caves turned into shrines. It's a place to worship and to study the Kandian era arts. A very important and highly respected temple by buddhists. Anyone visiting Matale , this is a must visit place.

The temple holds immense cultural and religious value—it’s where the Tripitaka was first transcribed onto palm leaves in Sri Lanka, making it a foundational site in Buddhist history.
