Introduction to Laxapana Waterfall Laxapana Waterfall, located in Sri Lanka’s Central Province, is one of the island’s most popular tourist destinations. The waterfall is fed by the Maskeliya Oya, a tributary of the Kelani River, and is approximately 423 feet (129 meters) high. The fall is thought to derive its name from the presence of iron ore (laksha) in the rocks over which the water flows. The fall was said to house a labyrinth of tunnels, one of which still exists. According to Dr Kautzsch, the old Sinhalese name of this waterfall is “Movini Ella” (මෝවිනි ඇල්ල). The best way to experience Laxapana Waterfall is by taking a dip in the pool at its base. The water is refreshingly cool and invigorating, and the surroundings are incredibly peaceful and serene. Laxapana Reservoir, where the fall is found, is used by power stations at New Laxapana, Canyon and Polpitye Samanala resulting in a certain amount of water depletion. Several villages including Laxapana, Pathana, Kiriwaneliya, Muruthatenna, Kottalena, Hunugala and Belumgala surround the fall. The fall was said to house a labyrinth of tunnels, one of which still exists. History of the Laxapana Waterfall There are several legends about the name Laxapana. Some say it means Hundred Thousand Lamps which is the literal meaning of Laxapana in Sinhala which is connected to the Wimalasurendra power station fed by this waterfall. Some say it’s derived from the presence of iron ore (laksha) in the rocks over which the water flows.

First of all if you are planning to visit this place, dont turn from kalugala junction since the road condition is extremely difficult from there to the entry point, Best road is to turn from diyagala and come crossing the Norton bridge reservoir dam. Location shown as lower entry point in google maps is correct. Need to go down about 500 stairs and the starting point of going down is not marked properly. it starts just adjacent to the two story house . Generally not much crowded and my personal view is this is not worth for older people considering the difficulty of the steps.

Laxapana Falls is a beautiful spot. The waterfall is tall and powerful. The area around it is calm and peaceful. The road to get there is narrow, but the views along the way are nice. It’s not too crowded, which makes it a great place to relax and enjoy nature. It’s definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Laxapana is a Very beautiful waterfall. There are two entrances. The first is at the top of the waterfall. From there, you can go to the place where the waterfall starts to fall. You have to go down about 400 meters from the main road. The other entrance is found after going about 800 meters further down the main road. You have to go down about 700 meters from the main road. It is difficult to get very close when the water is high. Although you can get close when the water is low, it is quite difficult to get through the rocks.

This waterfall was one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen! The sound of the water, the fresh air, and the stunning surroundings made it an unforgettable experience. It’s truly a hidden gem and absolutely worth the visit, pictures don’t do it justice.
