Abhayagiri, important ancient Theravāda Buddhist monastic centre (vihāra) built by King Vaṭṭagāmaṇi Abhaya (29–17 BC) on the northern side of Anurādhapura, the capital of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) at that time. Its importance lay, in part, in the fact that religious and political power were closely related, so that monastic centres had much influence on the secular history of the nation. But it is also important in the history of Theravāda Buddhism itself. It was originally associated with the nearby Mahāvihāra (“Great Monastery”), which was the traditional centre of religious and civil power built by Devānanpiya-Tissa (307–267 BC). Buddhist Pilgrimage Site On November 22, 2025, thirteen of us travelling with Flamingo Lanka visited the revered Abhayagiri stupa. It is one of the most significant and monumental landmarks in the ancient capitol Anuradhapura. Abhyagiri was once a thriving center of Buddhist learning and monastic life. Established in the 1st century BC by King Walagamba, it grew into a renowned international institution, attracting scholars from distant lands. The Chinese monk, Faxian, who visited in the 5th century recorded that the complex housed 5000 monks. The main attraction today is the Abhayagiri Stupa, standing 75 metres tall with a circumference of 350 metres. Over the centuries, the stupa had been renovated and restored maintaining its grandeur and spiritual significance Abhayagiri remains a deeply sacred site for Buddhists and a powerful symbol of faith. Following tradition, we walked clockwise around the stupa. Buddhists among us, joined the crowds offering flowers and chanting pirith - Buddhist stanzas - venerating Buddha and his teachings creating a serene, peaceful and a tranquil atmosphere.
