Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya is one of the most important religious sites in Sri Lanka, located in the town of Kataragama in the Southern Province. You do not have to be religious to visit Kataragama Temple, the atmosphere is so colourful and exciting. You cannot be unmoved by the whole spectacle and ritual of the walk from the entrance, across the bridge and the long walk. It is as if you were walking along the Mall towards Buckingham Palace. Be warned, you must walk barefoot and cannot wear a sun hat…it is incredibly hot underfoot. There is a myriad of colourful temple flower sellers urging you to buy offerings. I visit every year, to say my prayers and wishes. Last year, I was almost totally alone…this year, Poya Day weekend, and there were crowds of people, musicians, fruit sellers and even an elephant. This poor guy was chained, with a keeper wielding a 3 metre metal prod. You paid to feed this lovely beast, which should have been roaming in the bush…not a tourist attraction.

Visited Kataragama Temple during the New Year period, and the experience was truly special. There was a beautiful cultural dance performance that added to the festive and spiritual atmosphere. Vegetarian food was provided, simple and satisfying, in line with temple traditions. The place feels powerful, peaceful, and filled with devotion. A meaningful visit that brings a deep sense of faith and inner peace. Highly recommended.
