The boat ride to the pier takes about 10 to 15 minutes, with tour charges ranging from 2000 to 3000. Boats depart from Beruwala "Lellama," which is easily accessible by car. However, beyond Lellama, you must switch to a boat to reach the island. The lighthouse on Barberyn Island is currently managed by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). If you wish to climb the tower, you will need their permission. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, offering interesting insights into the lighthouse’s operation and history. Barberyn Island boasts lush green surroundings and beautiful panoramic views, making it an ideal spot to spend the day in nature. However, it is unfortunate that some visitors have irresponsibly discarded garbage, particularly plastic and polythene, which detracts from the island’s natural beauty. Despite this, the overall experience is rewarding, offering a peaceful and scenic getaway with a unique glimpse into maritime heritage.

Barberyn Lighthouse (also known as Beruwala Lighthouse) is a lighthouse located on Barberyn Island. Barberyn Island a 3.25 ha (8.0 acres) island situated 0.8 km (0.50 mi) offshore from the town of Beruwala on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, 56 km (35 mi) south of Colombo.The lighthouse is a 34 m (112 ft) high round white conical granite tower. The lighthouse was completed in November 1889, and operated by the Imperial Lighthouse Service. In 1969 it was upgraded with the replacement of the old dioptric apparatus (produced by Chance Brothers) and with a pedestal rotating beacon (Pharos Marine PRB-21 sealed beam optic and drive pedestal). It was further modernised in 2000, with the introduction of a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and is computer linked to the other major lighthouses around the country. The Barberyn Lighthouse is one of the four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka.

You have to take a boat to get to the island. After which it's a short walk to the Lighthouse. You can climb up the Lighthouse, and the view from the top is fantastic.

An Adventure Packed with Fun and Views! Visiting the Beruwala Lighthouse was nothing short of amazing! The boat ride to get there was such a mix of excitement and slight nervousness—it had those “hold on tight!” moments but was totally worth it for the stunning views of the sea. Once we reached, the vibe was unreal—lush palm trees everywhere and the lighthouse towering above, looking all majestic. The climb up the lighthouse was a bit of a workout, but trust me, the views from the top were absolutely worth it. Watching the sunset from there was pure magic—the sky turned into a crazy palette of gold, orange, and pink, and the endless ocean views just made it all the better. Oh, and after all that, we couldn’t resist taking a dip in the sea right nearby—it was refreshing and the perfect way to wrap up the adventure. This place is a vibe, and I’d go back for sure.
