Dunhinda Falls is truly one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Located about 5 km from the town of Badulla, this beautiful waterfall drops around 64 meters and is famous for the misty cloud that forms at the base of the cascade. The name “Dunhinda” actually comes from the Sinhala word meaning “smoky spray,” which perfectly describes the magical mist created when the water hits the rocks below. The journey to the waterfall is just as enjoyable as the destination. Visitors have to walk about 1 km along a scenic forest trail, surrounded by lush greenery, birds, butterflies, and occasionally monkeys. Along the path there are small local vendors selling herbal drinks and snacks, which adds a unique local touch to the experience. When you finally reach the viewing point, the sight is absolutely stunning. The powerful flow of water surrounded by thick jungle and cool mist creates a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for photography and nature lovers. However, visitors should be careful because the rocks near the waterfall can be slippery, and swimming there is not recommended for safety reasons. Overall, Dunhinda Falls is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Badulla or exploring Sri Lanka’s natural beauty. Highly recommended!

The views are truly spectacular, although the trail can be a bit challenging due to the most recent landslide from the mountain. Because the area is very humid, the rocks can be quite slippery, so it’s highly advisable to wear proper footwear with good grip. It takes about 30 minutes of trekking from the entrance. While some parts can feel intense, most of the route consists of stairs. There is an entrance fee, and along the way you’ll find several small shops selling different items, which is helpful in case you forget to bring water, just like we did.

I visited many times Dunhinda Waterfall in my life. what a beautiful place! Truly one of Sri Lanka’s natural treasures. and though it’s a bit tiring, belly-warming tea, fresh juice, and tasty mango achcharu to refresh yourself. Highly recommended for nature lovers and adventure seekers!

Dunhinda Falls is absolutely breathtaking, but there are a few things you should know before you head down. The path from the entrance to the waterfall is about 1.5 km long and is quite uneven with steep climbs and descents. Important Health Note: Because the trail is physically demanding and involves a lot of 'up and down' walking, it can be tough for those who aren't used to trekking or those with respiratory issues like wheezing. If you have any health conditions, please take it slow, carry your necessary medication (like inhalers), and go prepared with basic first aid. Watch out for Monkeys: There are plenty of monkeys along the trail. Be very careful with your belongings, especially food and water bottles, as they are quite bold and will try to grab them right out of your hands! Keep your bags zipped and avoid feeding them. Overall, the 'Smoky Mist' of the falls is a spectacular sight and well worth the effort if you are careful and prepared for the hike. A must-visit in Badulla!"
