Ravana's Cave is one of those places where the legend is far more captivating than the actual site itself. Tucked away in the hills near Ella, it’s steeped in the ancient lore of the Ramayana, believed to be one of the hideouts where King Ravana kept Princess Sita captive. This mythological connection is what drew me in, offering a chance to walk through a piece of living history. The adventure begins with a moderately challenging climb—around 650 to 700 steps that wind steeply up through a lush, green forest. The ascent is shaded, which helps with the heat, and you get some genuinely beautiful views of the valley and Little Adam's Peak across the way on your trek up. It's a solid little workout, filled with natural beauty and the chance to spot some local wildlife like monkeys and exotic birds. However, the "cave" at the top is a bit underwhelming. It's essentially a large, dark opening in the rock face, and you can only go a short distance inside before a barricade stops you. It’s very dark, damp, and home to many bats, and there is virtually no historical information provided on-site. Most visitors, myself included, find the journey and the surrounding natural views more rewarding than the cave itself. It's a quick stop—about an hour round trip—and best for those who really appreciate the mythology and enjoy a short, steep hike, rather than a significant landmark or panoramic viewpoint. Be sure to bring a torch for the inside of the cave!

This cave is located in the Ella area, and you can reach the base of the cave by any vehicle. There are designated parking spaces available, and you’ll need to buy a ticket, which costs LKR 50 per person to climb the cave(for locals). There are also small coffee shops nearby where you can enjoy tea or coffee. Reaching Ravana Cave is not difficult, as there are built-in stairs all the way to the top, you just need to climb them. You can walk inside the cave, but it's recommended to bring a torch since it's very dark inside. Phone lights may not be sufficient if you plan to explore deeper into the cave. We only went about 200 meters inside and didn’t explore further. The entire visit, climbing up, exploring, and coming back down, takes less than an hour, depending on how long you stay inside the cave

One can easily skip this since there is nothing to view at the top. It's just an old cave with no lights inside it. Although it do have a tunnel but its not accessible and full of bats. It was a big disappointment as it took around 20 mins for a steep hike with no views at the top.

Meh!! It was a hot day and I sweated buckets on the climb, 500 steps or more to a cave that, while it does have a cool story behind, is nothing really to write home about. No views at the top, although a few on the way up, or down. Rails at the top are rusted out so be careful when you reach out to steady yourself. Not really worth the climb.

History says that the cave is used by King Ravana to hide the Princess Sita. Located about 2 km from the Ella town. The cave lies on the foundation of a cliff, and is one of the great tourist attractions in Sri Lanka with a historical value. Excavations within this historical cave revealed evidence of human habitation dating back to 20,000 BC. The cave lies 1, 370 meters (4, 490 ft) above sea level, and measures 50 ft wide, 150 ft long and 60ft high. The cave is also believed to be connected to the cave in Dowa Rock Temple in Badulla. The network of caves and tunnels are all man made, connected to all the important cities and served as swift secret passage ways through the mountains.
